and other spellings
Query
- William T Hearne in his book Brief History and Genealogy of
the Hearne Family says:
- "Elisha (eldest son of Joshua Hearne) was born in Somerset County,
Maryland, in 1770; he went to North Carolina with his father, and
in 1786 settled in Jasper County, Georgia; he married, and raised
four children, and was killed in a well accidentally in 1810, and
his wife died soon after; then his children moved to Talladega
County, Alabama. Their names were: Asa, born in 1803; Moses, born
in 1805; David McDonald, born in 1806; and Lettie, born in 1808."
- Some evidence suggests that Elisha didn't die until 1823 in Henry
Co GA and that his wife Elizabeth didn't die until after 1830 in
Muscogee Co GA. Furthermore, there seems to be no evidence or reason
to believe that Elisha, father of Moses, David, Asa, and Letty, was in
fact the son of Joshua. Can anyone shed any light on this? Contact me at

Published Works About the HEARNEs
- The major work about the HEARNEs is Brief History and Genealogy of the Hearne Family
by William T Hearne. The title page says:
-
- "From A.D. 1066, when they went from Normandy with
William the Conqueror over to England, down
to 1680, when William Hearne came
to America, and on down
to A.D. 1895."
- This book was first printed in 1895. There were a couple of printings
and revisions after that. I'm not sure exactly how many editions or
printings. I would like to know. Despite the title, this book is
not brief (over 500 pages.) It does not have an index. As with many genealogy books
written during that era, citation of sources was not a major
consideration.
