The poli engine can be had for near nothing. They are a great source for parts when building a 331 of 354 Hemi. Parts that can be used from a Poli are the Block, Crank, Rods, Pistons, Starter, Valley Cover, Water Pump and crossover/thermostat. To help to visually pick out the poli in a pile of engines view the pictures below.

This is a two page hand drawn instructions on how to connect a mopar A-833 4 speed to a 1954-1958 chrysler hemi (this will probably work with the Dodge and Desoto hemi also). The negative is that you will have to get a manual flywheel from a chrysler/desoto/dodge which are getting hard to find. I did find a letter that was sent to Street Rod magazine that had some informative concerning adapting early 3 speed transmission and such. But all things be equal it is probably just as cost efficient to buy an after market adapter. I would advise downloading the info anyway - it may come in handy. The instruction came to me second hand and all I know of the author is his partial name - Roger Z.

You might want to click HERE for more general info about the A833 transmission. Especially, if you are planning on purchasing one!
This info is from the Dodge Truck Website. This is a well done tech page on how to install the Early Hemi in the 60's Dodge Truck. Also, A lot of other good hemi information here.
Put a hemi into 61-71 Dodge Pickup. Info from The Dodge Truck Website. This is a two page article from a November 1967 Hot Rod Magazine. It has some decent pictures and info on installing an Early Hemi into an early sixties chevy pickup. Also, the stock 57 TorqueFlite is used, Note in one of the photographs that the transmission emergency brake drum is not used.
This information was copied verbatim from a catalog form Dean Engineering.
1956 and up can use the late 318 timing chain and gears, timing cover and rear main seals, and vibration dampener(see note 1). 331-354 bearings are VERY difficult to find & VERY expensive. However, they can be alignbored to fit the 318 main set by machining approx. .030 off both sides(see note 2> off #3 thrust face and then the bearings will fit right in. 330-341 DeSotos and 315 Dodge can use 318 main set as follows; nos. 1,2,4 & 5 will fit right in without modification. #3 will have to be your old shell rebabbited and remachined to match the other 4 bearings diameters.
Rod bearings are also very difficult to find, However, the 326-389-400 Pontiac rod bearings can be fitted to the 331-354,330-341 & 315-325 engines by notching the rod and cap fit the locking tang of the Pontiac bearing and then resizing the rod as would be done during the rebuild process, as the Pontiacs bearing is the same size O.D. as the Mopar bearings; they are approx. .025 shorter than the mopar bearing which doesn't matter.
Note 1: Dampener is for the forged crank, not cast. Available from Mopar Performance, features 90 degree index markings asn symmetrical 6-bolt pulley attachment, MPP-P4452816 part no. PAW sells if for $120.00
Note 2: Power Play recommends Align bore approx. .060 to 340 spec. cut thrust main aprox. .045 per side to 340 spec. (thicker bearing I.D. only). Re-fit center & rear bearing tabs & use 340 bearings & rear seal (& its not a rope)..(editors note - it may be best to consult your machinist) Back Hemi Page
